Our 18th Century Crèche

This intricate 18th century Crèche or Nativity scene with over 40 handcrafted figures is staged in a spectacular 17th century wooden French corner bed. Originally displayed at The Little Traveler in the 1930s, Geneva History Museum continues this historic holiday tradition.

In 1992, the figures and bed were rescued from near destruction in a flooded basement and donated to our Museum for preservation and restoration. The Museum displays the Crèche each holiday season and shares its local and cultural story.

The figures were crafted by artists in Naples with many still wearing their original costumes made of silk. The display presents symbols of spiritual belief and references the wide variety of ethnic groups found in Naples.

Thanks to our annual holiday fundraisers and individual donations, all the figures plus the grotto, have been restored. We continue to raise funds in hopes of restoring the clothing and for continued maintenance.
